SULAIMANI — Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi will lead a trade delegation composed of senior Iraqi officials to China beginning on Thursday (September 19) in order to increase trade ties between the two countries.

Ten ministers, sixteen governors, and several prominent business people will accompany the Iraqi premiere.

The trip will last until September 23, according to Chinese state-media agency Xinhua.

China is Iraq's largest trading partner, totaling more than $30 billion in 2018. Iraq is one of China's most important sources of oil.

The announcement drew some criticism on social media, however, about the size and composition of the delegation.

Iraqi media reported that security expert Hisham Hashimi characterized the travel by so many officials as a “pilgrimage.”
