SULAIMANI – The Council of Representatives on Tuesday (August 20) removed lawmaker Tallal Zubayi's immunity from prosecution on charges of involvement in corruption.

Speaker Mohammad al-Halbusi issued a decree removing the protection, according to a statement issued by his office.

Al-Qarar Alliance, a grouping of Sunni parties to which Zubayi belongs, slammed the move as politically motivated. It noted that that the Iraqi Judicial Council had asked that Parliament remove immunity from a total of twenty-one lawmakers, but that only Zubayi was stripped of protection from prosecution.

Zubayi said that the decision was illegal and that he was being retaliated against for his criticism of al-Halbusi.

It is the first time during this parliamentary term that a lawmaker has been stripped of immunity.
