SULAIMANI — The federal Counterterrorism Unit said in a statement that ten Islamic State (ISIS) militants were killed and five others were arrested during an operation on Tuesday (August 13) in the Anbar desert.

It said that the operation focused on areas near Rutba and Wadi Hauran and that two of the militants had been wearing explosive belts.

Separately on Tuesday, ISIS militants launched attacks of the federal police and the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) in Daquq and Hawija respectively, killing one PMF fighter.

The Iraqi government officially declared victory over Islamic State in December 2017, but the group remains active in a number of parts of the country, operating sleeper cells and launching hit and run attacks.
