SULAIMANI — Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi made a visit to Diyala province on Monday (August 5) to oversee the launch of the third phase of Operation “Will of Victory.”

The latest phase will largely concentrate on Jalawla and Khanaqin, which have been the site of a number of deadly attacks by ISIS cells in recent weeks.

A Peshmerga unit will operate separately, but in coordination, in a nearby area.

The prime minister was accompanied on his tour by Iraqi Army Chief of Staff Othman al-Ghanmi, Deputy Chairman of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, federal Interior Minister Yassin Al-Yasiri, and Diyala Governor Muthana al-Tamimi.

In addition to the Iraqi Army and other federal units, detachments from seven PMF brigades will participate in the operation, the Security Media Cell said in a statement.

The Iraqi Air Force and the International Coalition will provide air cover for the operation.

The first phase “Will of Victory” was launched on July 7 and sought to clear ISIS fighters from Nineveh, Anbar, and Saladin governorates and along the border with Syria, while the second began on July 20 and focused on areas north of Baghdad city, Diyala and Saladin.
