Farmer dead in bomb blast in Jalawla’s Islah village

SULAIMANI – A person was killed in an explosion in Islah village in Koks sub-district near Jalawla town on Friday (August 2).

The head of Asayish in Koks Simko Muhammad told NRT Digital Media that a bomb had been placed on a road leading to agricultural areas.

“The bomb exploded while the farmer was on his way to his work. He was heavily wounded and died after being transferred to hospital,” Muhammad added. On June 30, suspected ISIS militants staged a similar attack targeting farmers in the area that killed one person and wounded three others.

One person was killed and two others were wounded by an improvised explosive device in Islah on July 21.

The militants also routinely target police units on patrol.

On April 3, militants attacked a checkpoint in Osaj village between Khanaqin and Jalawla, killing one policeman.

 Although Iraq declared victory against ISIS in December 2017, the extremists have mounted a guerrilla-style insurgency, going into hiding and staging surprise attacks in different parts of the country, including Kirkuk and Diyala governorates.
