SULAIMANI – Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi met with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in Tehran during an official visit on Monday with regional tensions high on the agenda (July 22).

“During the meeting, relations between the two neighboring peoples...developments in the region and ways to defuse the current crisis were discussed,” Abdul Mahdi's media office said in a statement.

The Iraqi premier said in May that he would visit both Iran and the US in order to help reduce tensions between the two countries. Baghdad has strong relationships with both Washington and Tehran.

Abdul Mahdi was accompanied on the trip by the deputy prime ministers of finance and oil, the ministers of defense and transport, the National Security Adviser, and a number of officials and advisers, according to the media office
