SULAIMANI – A Kolbar (porter) was shot and killed and six others were wounded by the security forces in Iran's West Azerbaijan Province on Saturday (July 20).

Hengaw Organization, which reports on human rights violations in Iranian Kurdistan, said that the shooting took place near Chalderan, also known as Siah Cheshmeh.

The deceased individual was reportedly a resident of Issagul.

The wounded Kolbars were evacuated to a hospital.

One Kolbar was shot and killed and three others were wounded by the security forces near Sardasht city on July 15.

231 Kurdish Kolbars were either killed or seriously wounded in 2018, according to Hengaw.

Of those, 71 were shot and killed by the Iranian security forces, the report said.

Kolbars carry goods across the mountainous border between Iran and Iraq on their backs. They frequently come under fire from Iranian border guards. Despite extreme temperatures in winter and summer, they risk their lives in the treacherous mountain passes to make ends meet.
