SULAIMANI – The director general the Divan of the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) interior ministry said on Friday (July 19) that a group Kurdish tourists who were detained in Turkey have been released.

Video footage circulating on on social media appeared to show a large group of people attacking the tourists on Thursday, who had attempted to take photos with a scarf bearing the design of the Kurdistan flag at a park in Trabzon.

After the violence, nine members of the group were arrested by the police.

Earlier on Friday, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) expressed its concern about their detention and urged Turkish authorities to release the group.

“The flag of the Kurdistan Region is recognized by the Iraqi Constitution, and has been previously displayed at Turkish airports to welcome official delegates from the Kurdistan Region,” the statement read.

The arrests prompted outrage on social media with many calling for a boycott of Turkey.

The incident came at a sensitive time, just a day after a Turkish diplomat and two others were gunned downat a restaurant in Erbil.
