SULAIMANI – The Peoples’ Democratic Party’s (HDP) leadership issued a statement on Friday (July 19) saying that the party had no links with violence, following allegations that one of its lawmaker's brother was a suspect in Wednesday's attack in Erbil.

HDP co-chairs Pervin Buldan and Sezai Temelli “strongly” condemned the “dark” attack, saying that violence against civilians and diplomats was unacceptable.

However, they also said that the report should not be an excuse for the Turkish authorities to arrest Dersim Dag, who was elected as an MP for Diyarbakir and is the sister of the only person named so far in the investigation into the attack.

“Linking our party with the [Erbil attack] increases suspicions about the incident,” the statement said, before reaffirming the party’s support for peace and dialogue.

The Kurdistan Region's counterterrorism service released the name and photo of Mazloum Dag on Thursday evening, alleging that he was a suspected accomplice in the attack, which killed a Turkish diplomat and two other people at a restaurant.
