KRG calls for release of tourists who were attacked in Turkey

SULAIMANI – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has expressed its concern about the apparent detention in Turkey of a number tourists from the Kurdistan Region and called for their release as soon as possible.

“Several people from the Kurdistan Region were recently attacked in the Turkish city of Trabzon. It is understood that they were holding a Kurdistan flag while taking photographs. They were later arrested by the Turkish authorities,” the statement read.

KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has ordered relevant KRG officials to discuss the matter with their Turkish counterparts in order to secure the release of the tourists as soon as possible

“The flag of the Kurdistan Region is recognized by the Iraqi Constitution, and has been previously displayed at Turkish airports to welcome official delegates from the Kurdistan Region,” the statement added.

Footage of the alleged incident has gone viral on social media, which appeared to show several people being attacked by a crowd in a park.
