SULAIMANI — The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) on Thursday (July 11) agreed to select Tayib Jabar as their joint candidate for the Kirkuk governorship.

The parties met at the PUK Politburo office in Sulaimani to make the official announcement.

KDP Spokesperson Mahmoud Mohammed said during a press conference that they would submit Jabar’s name under the banner of the Brayati List to the head of the Kirkuk Provincial Council.

He added the KDP and PUK would hold talks with all relevant parties, including Baghdad, to solve the issues in Kirkuk.

A source, who had knowledge of the KDP-PUK discussions, told NRT Digital Media on July 3 that the KDP and PUK had reportedly agreed to a joint candidate for Kirkuk governor.

The issue of Kirkuk had been a running sore between the two parties, with each blaming the other for the city's fall to central government forces in October 2017 in the wake of the Region's independence referendum.
