SULAIMANI — The Iranian Army continued to shell the border areas of the Kurdistan Region on Thursday (July 11), despite calls from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to halt the bombardment.

Mayor of Choman district Ahmed Qadir told NRT Digital Media that the Iranian army’s artillery had shelled the border areas near Alana and Zinune in the district, 160 kilometers northeast of Erbil.

NRT Digital Media reporter Abdo Hussein said earlier that the Iranian army’s artillery had been shelling targets near Alana village in Balakayati for over an hour.

There were no reports of casualties.

Iran’s bombardment killed a girl and two of her brothers in Bradost sub-district on Wednesday.

The KRG issued a statement following the bombardment calling on the government of Iran to halt shelling the Kurdistan Region’s border areas.

“We are calling on the Islamic Republic of Iran to halt the bombardment of the area in order not to make anxiety and displacement in the area,” the statement read.

Dozens of villagers have evacuated their homes in the Bradost area in fear of bombardment by the governments of Turkey and Iran.

Turkey and Iran routinely carry out airstrikes and artillery bombardments in the Kurdistan Region against suspected targets of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and Iranian Kurdish opposition groups near the borders with both countries.
