SULAIMANI — New Generation Movement President Shaswar Abdulwahid has been denied bail, according to his lawyers.

His s lawyers said that Abdulwahid was brought to court for a hearing and later returned to jail.

They said that the Asayish denied them access to the hearing and that the bail request was submitted in a letter.

Meanwhile, head of New Generation caucus in the Kurdistan Parliament Kazim Faruq said lawmakers and lawyers were not being permitted to read the case of Abdulwahid.

Faruq said during NRT’s Tawtwe interview program that Abdulwahid’s lawyers were asking for his release on bail on daily basis but the court was rejecting it.

“The non-domestication of New Generation has irritated the authority, thus the security forces have refused to submit Shaswar’s case to the police,” he added.

“Abdulwahid has gone on a hunger strike for over 48 hours and his health condition is unstable. Asayish does not allow Shaswar’s lawyers to attend the trial.”

He also indicated that Asayish has not allowed the movement’s lawyers to defend the eleven detained members of the New Generation.

The Sulaimani court issued an arrest warrant for Abdulwahid on May 15. He turned himself in the following day and was taken into custody.

Movement lawmaker in the Kurdistan Parliament Kawa Abdulqadir said last week that Abdulwahid had been placed in solitary confinement at the Asayish directorate in Sulaimani and that his life was in “danger.”

Eleven other Movement members are also in custody.
