SULAIMANI — Member of the Change Movement’s (Gorran) National Assembly Hemn Shekhani said on Thursday (April 18) refuted press reports that this party had reached an agreement with the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) to create a second vice president position.

Sheikhani told NRT Digital Media that no such decision had been made by Gorran’s leadership.

“What is being said is personal views. The allegations have no basis,” he said.

“Gorran will not be hurdle in forming this cabinet,” he added. “But we will not let anybody or side to oppressively reduce the number of positions we receive.”

Shekhani went on to say that Gorran would make good-faith attempts to reach an agreement with the KDP in the coming weeks.

The issue of the vice presidency has become a stumbling block over the last two weeks, with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) seeking to maneuver Gorran out of the post, which it was promised by the KDP in a political agreement in February.

The PUK has objected to Gorran having a crucial role in security affairs.

In an effort to satisfy all parties, one idea that has been floated is to create a second vice president position.
