SULAIMANI — Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Housing and Construction Minister Darbaz Kosrat Rasul said on Monday (April 15) that his ministry needs $40 million to rehabilitate the Region’s bridges.

Rasul told NRT Digital Media that the recent flooding has exacerbated an already critical problem, adding that many bridges were aging and had needed repairs for some time.

“There are eighteen bridges between Kalar and Darbandikhan districts and the roads between Soran-Haji Omaran, Erbil-Koya, and several other roads between the cities and towns that need reconstruction. We need $40 million to repair them,” Rasul said.

He also warned that there was little current funding for the rehabilitation efforts, saying that there was currently just $120,000 budgeted for bridge repair.

“[We allocated] $2 million before the economic crisis,” he lamented.
