SULAIMANI — The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Minister
of Health, Saman Barzinji, said on Wednesday (May 18) that haemorrhagic fever
is not a new disease; however, it is dangerous as one new suspected infection
was recorded in Zakho district in Dohuk province.
Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever is a viral haemorrhagic
fever usually transmitted by ticks, according to the WHO.
Barzinji said it can also be contracted through contact with
animal tissues where the virus has entered the bloodstream during and
immediately post-slaughter of animals. 10 to 40 per cent of those who contract
the virus die as a result.
He added that the Health Ministry had begun several measures
to control and contain the virus and protect people from the disease.
He said the process of identifying infected people is
carried out daily in the Kurdistan Region.
Barzinji said that previously a confirmed case in the Erbil
governorate was identified, and the patient was sent home after receiving
adequate treatment.
