SULAIMANI — The Iraqi men’s national football team lost to traditional powerhouse Argentina 4-0 in a friendly on Thursday evening (October 11) in the Riyadh.

Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martínez opened up the scoring with a header in the 18th minute in his second game for the senior squad.

Argentina continued to control the game with Roberto Pereyra scoring eight minutes into the second half, before Germán Pezzella and Franco Cervi added two late goals in the Saudi capital.

"It wasn't easy opening them up but we managed it and we were patient and managed to score more goals," Pezzella said according to ESPN FC.

The Lions of Mesopotamia play Saudi Arabia on Monday, before taking on Bolivia in the UAE next month. The defeat was only Iraq’s second during the past year.

Argentina seem to have righted the ship under new coach Jorge Sampaoli, after getting ousted at this summer’s World Cup in the first round of the knock out stage by eventual winners France. The team was playing without superstar Lionel Messi and featured several debuts and young players.

Before beating Iraq, they defeated Guatemala 3-0 and drew with Colombia 0-0. Next up for them is a clash with South American archrivals Brazil in Jeddah on Monday.
