SULAIMANI — The Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) released a statement on Monday (July 22) saying that a July 19 explosion at one of its bases in Saladin governorate was not caused by either a missile or a drone strike as first suspected.

The statement said that explosion was instead sparked when some heavy fuel accidentally caught fire, citing a PMF investigation into the incident

Two fighters were wounded.

The PMF, also known as Hashd al-Shaabi, said that an investigative committee from the federal security directorates and experts in missiles and drones was sent to the military camp to investigate.

On July 19, the federal Security Media Cell initially said that a drone had been responsible.

The facility belonged to the PMF's 16th Brigade, which is mostly made up of Turkmen fighters.
