SULAIMANI – Kurdistan Islamic Group (KIG) lawmaker in Kurdistan parliament Soran Omar said Tuesday (March 19) that leadership of the Natural Resources Committee has been taken from the party.

During a news conference, Omar said that the KIG had expected that one of its MPs would chair the committee, but that the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Change Movement (Gorran) had agreed to strip the KIG of the post.

“We are worried about Gorran’s stance, which led to our caucus losing the position. A part of the reason was related to me because I had been nominated for the position,” he added.

On Sunday, the New Generation Movement announced that it was transferring its committee leadership positions to the KIG.

Omar also said that a joint request had been sent to the speaker’s office that would have formalized the transfer, but that it had been rejected.

He noted the Turkmen, Chaldean, and the Assyrians have had a similar request approved.
