SULAIMANI – The Kremlin is ready to supply Peshmerga with military aid for the fight against terrorism, a Russian official said Sunday (March 13).

Russian Ambassador to Baghdad Elijah Anatolyevich Margonov led a delegation on a visit to the Kurdistan Region’s capital city for meetings with senior Kurdish officials.

According to the Kurdistan Region Presidency’s (KRP) website, officials discussed the war against the Islamic State (IS) in Iraq and a much anticipated operation to retake Mosul, as well as bilateral relations.

“Russia is ready to help Peshmerga in the military field, in the fight against terrorists,” Margonov said during the meeting, according to the KRP’s statement.

Regarding the war in Syria, Barzani told the Russian delegation reportedly that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) stance is focused on the rights of Kurds in the country.

“The Kurdistan Region’s stance towards the Syrian government and other parties depends on their stance about the Kurdish nation and admission of Kurdish rights in Syria,” Barzani was quoted as saying.

Inside the Kurdistan Region, the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs is awaiting a second delivery of weapons and ammunition from Moscow that was expected to arrive on March 13.

Speaking to NRT, Russian Consul General to Erbil Viktor Simakov said the shipment of weapons for Peshmerga forces would arrive in the Kurdistan Region soon.

According to a Peshmerga Ministry source, that plane should have arrived in the Kurdistan Region’s capital city on Sunday; however, it was expected to be delayed due to issues with the central Iraqi government.
